Chancroid

Chancroid, also known as soft chancre or soft sore, is caused by a bacterium. The disease occurs primarily in Africa, Asia and Latin America and affects men more often than women.

Symptoms and signs

Pus-filled blisters form at the site of entry of the pathogen which then develop into very painful ulcers with ragged edges and a red border. In many cases there is also a painful infection of the lymph nodes and lymphatic channels. The lymph nodes often develop into abscesses which can break down leading to sinus formation.

Diagnosis

The bacteria can be detected in a smear taken from the ulcer.

Prevention and treatment

The best protection against chancroid is safer sex.

Treatment is usually with antibiotics. Chancroid can be cured if treatment is started early enough.

Sexual partners should always be treated as well in order to prevent late complications and spread of the infection.
