Male sterilization is also called vasectomy or 'the snip'. After administering a local anesthetic to the scrotum the doctor cuts both vas deferens (the tubes leading from the testes to the penis) and seals the ends. The minor surgical procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis.
Vasectomy only prevents sperm from entering the seminal fluid. It has no effect on libido, erectile function or ejaculation.
The fear that vasectomy might lead to a painful build-up of sperm is unfounded. The sperm that continue to be produced are absorbed by the body.
How reliable is vasectomy?
Vasectomy is a very effective method of contraception. However, it is important to be aware that sterilization does not provide immediate contraceptive protection. It can be assumed that sperm will still be present in the passages between the prostate and seminal vesicles for some time. As a rule of thumb one can say that examination of the ejaculate for the presence of sperm should be performed after about ten ejaculations or about four weeks after the procedure. The man is only considered to be definitely infertile when sperm are no longer detected in the semen. Until this is the case other methods of contraception should be used.
The advantages of vasectomy
Vasectomy is a suitable method of contraception for men whose family planning is complete or who do not wish to have children. As the worry about an unwanted pregnancy is eliminated vasectomy can lead to a more relaxed and satisfying sex life.
The disadvantages of vasectomy
Vasectomy can only be reversed by a very complicated operation which only restores fertility in about 65 percent of cases. It is therefore important for the decision to be well considered. The likelihood of successful refertilization decreases with increasing time since the vasectomy.
Vasectomy is a surgical procedure. Complications are very rare but your doctor will inform you of possible risks. There can be bruising, wound infections and inflammation of the testes or epididymides.
In certain cases vasectomy cannot be performed, e.g. in the case of varicose veins in the scrotum.
