Side-effects and risks

The intrauterine system (IUS) is a potent medical device which can also have side-effects. The following information gives a general outline of the side-effects and risks of the IUS. However, in case of conflicting information the product information of the preparation you have been prescribed always takes precedence. It is therefore important to read the product information carefully and follow any advice given by your doctor.

Before the IUS is inserted you should have a general physical exam and a pelvic exam to make sure that you have no contraindications (medical conditions which prohibit using the IUS).

The IUS is very well tolerated. The amount of progestin released by the IUS is very small. Unwanted side-effects such as headaches, breast tenderness or nausea usually only occur during the first few months after insertion and then usually subside.

Ectopic pregnancies while using the IUS are just as rare as in women who have been sterilized.

In contrast to the conventional intrauterine device pelvic infections are relatively rare with the IUS so that the risk of later infertility is extremely small. As the cervical mucus remains thick and sticky there is even additional protection against pelvic infections.
