Positive side-effects of the IUS

The intrauterine system is suitable for women who want long-term contraception. You don't have to think about contraception any more for about 5 years. This gives you plenty of room for spontaneity in your love life.

The IUS also has some positive side-effects which are not directly related to its contraceptive action.

It is suitable for treatment of excessively heavy and painful periods.

While the IUS is in place there is little build-up of the uterine lining in the course of the cycle. Although spotting and breakthrough bleeding are more frequent in the first 3 to 6 months, with continued use periods become lighter, shorter and less painful. Many women stop having periods altogether when the IUS has been in place for some time.

When the IUS is removed the cyclic build-up of the uterine lining is resumed. You then have cycles with regular bleeding again and are able to become pregnant.

With the IUS in place the cervical mucus remains thick and sticky, giving additional protection against pelvic infections.
