Use of the intrauterine system (IUS)

Insertion of the IUS

The intrauterine system is placed in the uterine cavity by a doctor during a period. It is inserted through the vagina with the help of a thin tube. When the tube is pulled out the arms of the IUS open thus fixing it securely in the uterine cavity. Finally, the doctor shortens the retrieval threads to the correct length.

Insertion of the IUS is not painful. You may experience temporary discomfort as during a menstrual period. If necessary your doctor can give you an analgesic before the procedure. Immediately after insertion of the IUS you may have menstruation like symptoms. These normally subside after a short time.

When you go for your regular gynecological check-up your doctor will check the position of the IUS. Ideally the position should be checked once after your first period and then every 6 to 12 months.

After insertion of the IUS

You will be able to feel the threads of the IUS with your finger but you won't be aware of the presence of the IUS in the uterus. Your partner will not notice the retrieval threads during intercourse but if you find that the threads do interfere, you can ask your doctor to shorten them.

The IUS can be left in place for about 5 years and should then be removed and replaced.

Removal of the IUS

The IUS should only be removed by a doctor. You can become pregnant again as soon as you have your next ovulation. Some women therefore already become pregnant in the first month after removal of the IUS.
