The minipill is a potent drug which can also have side-effects.
The following information gives a general outline of the side-effects and risks of the minipill. However, in case of conflicting information the product information of the preparation you have been prescribed always takes precedence. It is therefore important to read the pack insert carefully and follow any advice given by your doctor.
Before you are prescribed the minipill you should have a general physical exam and a pelvic exam to make sure that you have no
contraindications (medical conditions which prohibit using the minipill).
The minipill is very well tolerated. Bleeding abnormalities are the most common side-effect (irregular cycles, spotting and breakthrough bleeding or cessation of menstruation). You must decide for yourself whether the possibility of such bleeding abnormalities is acceptable.
When you start taking the minipill you may experience minor side-effects such as nausea, headaches, feelings of depression or increased appetite. However, these symptoms usually disappear after a few cycles.
Serious side-effects of the minipill are very rare. Nevertheless you should pay attention to any symptoms as there are
cases in which you may need to stop taking the minipill immediately.
