Puberty

Puberty is the phase of transition from late childhood to sexual maturity, i.e. to the phase in a woman's life during which she is able to have children. Puberty is initiated by the increasing production of sex hormones. In girls it usually begins between the ages of 10 and 12. The timing often varies considerably from person to person and depends on a number of factors (e.g. genetic factors, general health).

In girls the increased production of estrogens in particular leads to a number of physical changes. Puberty ends with the first menstrual period, the visible sign that a woman is now sexually mature.

The changes in hormone production during puberty can also lead to distressing disorders such as acne.

But puberty is a not only a time of physical change. It is also a time of psychological, emotional and social development. Girls now have to take responsibility for their own health.

Before you have sex for the first time, at the latest, you should see your doctor to discuss contraception and have your first gynecological exam. That way you will be well prepared.

Puberty is not too early to start thinking about birth control. Girls can and should take an active part in deciding on a suitable contraceptive. It is important to know what methods of contraception are available so that you can make a well-informed decision. Take the responsibility, make every child a wanted child: by choice - not chance.
